Ananthakrishnan et al. (2019): first institution in India to formally introduce competency-based training for PG residents with EPAs and e-portfolio.
The Study
Ananthakrishnan et al. (2019) described the Competency Based Learning and Training (CoBALT) model at Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry — the first institution in India to formally introduce competency-based training for postgraduate medical residents. Published in the National Medical Journal of India (NMJI).
Key Findings
- Introduced EPAs with Dreyfus developmental levels for PG training within existing MCI regulatory constraints
- Implemented Multi-Source Feedback (MSF) as a workplace-based assessment tool
- Used ePortfolios for continuous monitoring of resident competency progression
- Demonstrated that CBME implementation is feasible within Indian regulatory frameworks without waiting for top-down mandates
Why This Matters
The CoBALT model proved that Indian medical colleges can implement CBME proactively, not just reactively to NMC mandates. The model was later presented as Institutional Distinctiveness for SBV’s second NAAC assessment cycle and received full marks for execution and sustained use.
